Q: Does a vegan diet cure diabetes, or just put it into remission?

A: I have a lot to say here as I am a health fanatic and know a lot about diabetes (with several family members having it).

I don’t think you can put it completely into remission, BUT you can gain full control of your blood sugar levels and maybe slightly improve your glucose tolerance by eating a vegetable rich diet with proper protein intake which will allow you to live as if you never even had diabetes and still treat yourself every once and a while to something sweet/unhealthy (and I know some people who are like this). On one note though, you can NOT ignore certain protein sources like meat, dairy, and eggs. Certain necessary amino acids like l-taurine and others are ONLY found in meat, dairy, and egg proteins and many of these amino acids are beneficial and critical to maintaining your blood sugar balance. My grandfather is type 2 diabetes and was once on a low fat, very limited meat/protein diet for a long time until he saw a well respected cardiologist from Johns Hopkins (baltimore) who told him that his body wasn’t making certain non-essential amino acids (in his liver) which affected his hearth health, blood sugar, cellular energy, and cholesterol and that he needed to get more protein and more of the (anti-inflammatory and heart healthy) omega 3 and to eat more healthy fats (like olive oil/fish oil)– no red meat and no flax oil though. If you eat meat, make sure it’s free range, organic. If it’s going to be beef, it MUST be grass fed. Grain fed cows (as opposed to grass fed-free range) have the highest levels of saturated fats and lowest levels of omega 3 fatty acids. Similarly free range eggs and raw butter have the higher levels of omega 3’s.

About going vegan– Plant derived proteins are harder for your body to digest and assimilate (because the cell walls of the cells in plants are very tough), so if you do go vegan, cook fibrous, cruciferous veggies well– cooking breaks down the cell walls allowing your digestive system to digest the inner parts of the cell where all the nutrients are. Limit 1 serving of soy a day. Also eat high protein grains (like quinoa, millet, sprouted grains bead) and eat a wide variety of beans, legumes, seeds, and nuts. Eat raw nuts too and make sure you soak them before hand. If you eat seeds make sure you sprout them before eating them (Mung bean sprouts are good). Try to make an exception and eat lowfat organic yogurt– the probiotics and proteins in yogurt are GOOD for you. Also, while soy is healthy, many vegans tend to over consume soy which is a problem because soy has phyto-estrogens in it that (according to my doctor) act like estrogen in the body which can accumulate and disrupt the delicate hormonal balance of your body and cause certain problems (like a diminished muscle mass, mood, and libido).

There are certain herbs and supplements that you can take that will either raise or lower your blood sugar and lower cholesterol too (like cinnamon, ginseng, bitter melon, Psyllium fiber, ginger, tumeric, holy basil, fennugreek, etc) BUT if I were you, I wouldn’t take any of these without seeing a certified naturopathic-type doctor (like a TCM doctor, chiropractor, ND, nutritionist/herbalist). Fish oil (capsules) is something you can start taking to help keep your bad cholesterol down, blood sugar balanced, and brain healthy– it also fights inflammation which is something that people with diabetes will need to guard against. I even take fish oil (I’m not diabetic)- I take it for prevention. You can get it anywhere (walmart), just make sure that the bottle says it’s purified. If you choose to go fully vegan (and not even eat yogurt), take probiotics (like flora Q).

The good news is that there is a pharmaceutical company that is researching this antioxidant compound (only be available through prescription from a MD) called resveratrol (it’s from red wine). You can already buy this in health stores, but is not going to be the same quality or strength as the drug version that they are researching/making right now– the cool thing is that it’s a natural phyto-compound extracted from red wine/grapes. They did small studies in india on people with type 2 diabetes with this and discovered that several diabetes indication markers such as glucose tolerance and blood sugar balance improved… there was also a reduction in bad cholesterol. The hemoglobin A1c test and tests showed improvements that lasted for months after the resveratrol therapy. While the long term studies that they’re doing now will tell, they are hypothesizing that resveratrol will also reverse damage done to cell mitochondria which would restore some energy to people with cellular mitochondria damage over a long period of the drug therapy. This is also being researched for use with people with cancer and people with diabetes related aging and heart conditions.

Q: Do you think a vegan raw diet can cure cancer, diabetes or any other health condition?
Yes or no, why, why not?
Thanks.
I don’t disagree with you, i whole heartedly agree it can’t cure cancer.
Ashley or whatever your name is YESTERDAY in a question you said you ate meat 5 times a day to keep your protein up for your muscle building?!
LOL

A: No. There has been no proof of any such thing. Basing beliefs on studies as opposed to actual scientific research leads to many misconceptions.

Although, a healthy diet, designation irrelevant, can lessen some health risks.

You know, many here like to talk about eating meat leading to colon cancer. But, when they make that statement they neglect to explain that the consumption of fruits, vegetables and fiber negates that risk. As of matter of fact, those studies usually won’t mention that either. Why? Agenda. A study is simply a collection of data from a cross section of people. A limited # of specific questions are answered and these questions are aimed at promoting an idea before they’re even answered. In the case of meat and health, a study doesn’t differentiate between a meat eater who works in a coal mine or a vegetarian marathon runner for example. They are simply 2 people in the study. It doesn’t differentiate between a meat eater with family genetic history of illness and a meat eater who eats only lean meats in moderation and exercises regularly. They are simply 2 people in the study. This is NOT scientific research. It’s simply the statistical response to a skewed set of questions and we’ll never know what info. was not included when the findings are published either.

I’d be surprised if any one of us has never taken a survey or answered a questionnaire where we had to choose an answer that really didn’t fit us, but it was the closest one available. Or had to choose between 2 answers that both fit, but could only choose one as an answer. This is the fallibility of “studies”. At the end of the day, the only answer you get from a study is “maybe”.

Q: How can diet be effective in the prevention or cure of diabetes?
How can diet be effective in the prevention or cure of diabetes ?

A: Diet and exercise are equally important in reversing type two diabetes. (note that I did not say “cure”). It is vitally important that the type two diabetic adjust their lifestyle to include lots of healthy raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains and to exclude any and all refined, processed, enriched, packaged, preserved, man made carbohydrates (especially high fructose corn syrup) from their diet. It is equally important for the type two diabetic to get daily moderate exercise. I emphatically disagree with the good doctor. I am living proof that the disease is reversible. It is only progressive if the patient persists in living the lifestyle that brought us here in the first place. Very few doctors seem to realize this. Bear in mind that type two diabetes is a modern disease and it’s existence was practically unheard of 200 years ago, when factory processed foods were rarely found in people’s diets. Look up the Pima Indian’s plight for more on this. There are a few doctors that have done their homework and have found as I have that with healthy diet and regular exercise, a type two diabetic can live a long, healthy, and medication free life. All it requires is a lot of research and some practical application of that knowledge. I was getting worse and worse until I became desperate enough to learn for myself how to deal with the disease. The chances of gleaning this knowledge from a conventionally trained M.D. are slim. But there are a few out there that have learned. Search Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Neal Barnard, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Or simply click the diabetes info link in my profile.

Q: Can a vegan diet cure diabetes?

A: Hi,

You might want to read this book.

Dr. Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes.

Dr. Barnard’s patients show that changing diet can change your life. There is a list of type one and type two diabetics. It shows how they changed their diet and then where able to have a more stable blood sugar level, even while reducing the amount of medication.

Good Luck!

Q: Diabetes cured through diet and exercise?
I heard a story about a boy who had diabetes at a young age because of genetic reasons. He had maintained an excellent diet his whole life and was on the wrestling team his freshman year of high school. Just a few weeks into wrestling season he was cured from diabetes and his body began to function as it is suppose to. I don’t know if this is a true story, but could it be possible? Is diabetes curable through diet and excercise?

A: That is quite a story, but I’ve never heard of this before. I would think if it were true, many people would be exercising alot more! I have had people with diabetes in my classes, and their blood sugar does come down and level out when they exercise on a consistent basis and they feel alot better. Being cured? No.

Q: can low carb diet cure diabetes? or get it enough under control to not need insulin.?
I have type II diabetes and have been taking oral medication (pills) for it. I admit that I haven’t tried too hard to eat right but now I want to get healthier and lose weight and most of all get rid of the diabetes. I am planning to do Atkins, which is low carb diet. Will low carb dieting lower and regulate my blood sugar and get rid of diabetes? Will it at least control it enough to not need the insulin (in small dose for now) that my doctor wants me to start taking. Please help!

A: Probably will work for you . Yes a low glycemic diet is in order. You need a GLYCEMIC INDEX. You will find it easier than Adkins Diet. And works better. Heres the website:http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

The glycemic load (GL) is a relatively new way to assess the impact of carbohydrate consumption that takes the glycemic index into account, but gives a fuller picture than does glycemic index alone. A GI value tells you only how rapidly a particular carbohydrate turns into sugar. It doesn’t tell you how much of that carbohydrate is in a serving of a particular food. You need to know both things to understand a food’s effect on blood sugar. That is where glycemic load comes in. The carbohydrate in watermelon, for example, has a high GI. But there isn’t a lot of it, so watermelon’s glycemic load is relatively low. A GL of 20 or more is high, a GL of 11 to 19 inclusive is medium, and a GL of 10 or less is low.

Foods that have a low GL almost always have a low GI. Foods with an intermediate or high GL range from very low to very high GI.

Both GI and GL are listed here. The GI is of foods based on the glucose index–where glucose is set to equal 100. The other is the glycemic load, which is the glycemic index divided by 100 multiplied by its available carbohydrate content (i.e. carbohydrates minus fiber) in grams. (The “Serve size (g)” column is the serving size in grams for calculating the glycemic load; for simplicity of presentation I have left out an intermediate column that shows the available carbohydrates in the stated serving sizes.) Take, watermelon as an example of calculating glycemic load. Its glycemic index is pretty high, about 72. According to the calculations by the people at the University of Sydney’s Human Nutrition Unit, in a serving of 120 grams it has 6 grams of available carbohydrate per serving, so its glycemic load is pretty low, 72/100*6=4.32, rounded to 4.
This has a list of 2, 480 foods.

It should be your eating bible for life. Take care >

Use ¼ to ½ teaspoon of cinnamon per day. Add it to your coffee, oatmeal, smoothie, or wherever you find it palatable.
If you already suffer from diabetes, be sure to stay on a regular schedule with your cinnamon usage so that your blood sugar levels don’t yo-yo.Use the same amount at the same time every day so that you can get a sense of how cinnamon affects your own personal blood sugar readings.
Use the powdered spice or a cinnamon stick. Cinnamon pills are also available, and can be found easily via an online search. MHCP is water soluble and is not found in cinnamon oil.

Lime and lemon juice delay the digestion of starches as does vinegar. I’ve found that 2-3 tablespoons of lime or lemon juice reduces my post prandial BG response by 10-20 points. Rick Mendosa’s site has a lot of material on acids in the diet. Take a look at http://www.mendosa.com/acidic_foods.htm .

Q: Is a Vegan Diet good for diabetes?
I have recently heard that a vegan diet would cure diabetes. Is there any evidence of this that can be found/ What percent of vegans are diabetic? I appreciate any input on this subject from those of you with information. Have a wonderful weekend and a fabulous LORD’s DAY! Thank you, Eds, A Simple Christian .
Pangel and KatyZo,
I am a type 1 diabetic of more than 40 years. I have done more reseascr on the topic than most medics that I have been with. Their expertise is NOT diet at all. I have an allergy to some milk products that has been with me since birth and the research that I have read found that every type 1 diabetic also has this to be the case. I watched a newscast that a gentleman told that he had and could cure diabetes from a change of diet to EXCLUDE all meat products and biproducts. I believe that this is a vegan diet essentially. I will get HIS name and include it here.

A: is that type 1 or type 2 Eds
type 2 is diet controlled and may benefit from a vegan diet
type one needs carbohydrates in order for the insulin to take effect , so a vegan diet would be very difficult with type 2
I would definitely ask your doctor about this before taking anyones opinion on it though

Q: I know of people cured naturally of diabetes through detoxing and diet – what is best detoxing?
A friend of mine’s husband was cured of diabetes naturally through diet, nutrition, and most especially, detoxing. I have been out of touch with my friend for a while now, but I never found out what detoxing is and if there is any special nutrition.

A: This is kind of funny when someone has to put “blah, blah, RETIRED NURSE…” thinking that people will be impressed. With me, it is quite the opposite – as though you are trying to justify some shortcomings. I say this because I am living proof that it can be completely cured – my brother-in-law showed me how because I was thirsty, tired, and I had to urinate all the time. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. It took about 6 months and after 5 months I knew I did not have diabetes anymore. Why? Because I wasn’t tired, thirsty, and did not have to urinate all the time anymore.

I had not been to the doctor during this time, and kept giving the doctor excuses for not going back. After I decided to go back, my brother-in-law told me not to tell the doctor anything. The doctor did a blood test again and said, “That’s really strange – there is no sign of diabetes in your blood anymore…but you know, this happens sometimes…” Of course it does doc!! LOL

It was through detoxing and good nutrition that I was cured. As the person above mentioned about the sun revolving around the earth, the “retired nurse” and the others still living in the time when the sun revolved around the earth need to realize what a crock so much “modern” medicine actually is.

The people who are actually curing people of Type 2 diabetes and cancer everyday can be found at www.gerson.org.

Q: Diabetes cure?
I think I have diabetes. Last year I started a job where I am on my feet most of the day and parts of my feet went numb. at first I thought it was my shoes but it doesn’t go away even on the weekends. I think it is diabetes.
Is there any thing I can do to stop this, like a chnge of diet? I’m going to the doctor soon but I’d like to know what you people think.

A: diet and exercise are very important. but sometimes you need medication, either soclled AHA (oral) or insulin shots

Q: Can you cure diabetes by losing weight?
If an obese 200 pound woman, lost about 100 poounds on a low carb diet, could she be cured from her diabetes?

A: losing weight helps a lot.

Q: South Indian diet for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes?
What is the healthy South Indian diet to cure insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes?

A: Fiber
The Indian Council of Medical Research suggests a daily intake of 25 to 35 grams of fiber. Fiber helps to naturally reduce glucose levels. In the Indian diet, high fiber foods include things like bran, whole grains, cereal, fresh fruit, dried fruit, raw vegetables, red beans, bean sprouts, mullet preparations, cluster beans, drumstick stems, lotus stems, curry leaves, pomegranate, green chilies, coriander, and cardomon seeds.Introduction to high fiber foods should be done slowly and progressively; increase the amount of fiber by five grams a day until you meet the 35 grams per day limit. Doing so will help you to avoid the feeling of a distended abdomen and problems with flatulence or bowel regularity.

Carbohydrates
The diabetic should consume 65 to 75 percent of daily calories in complex carbohydrates. This will ensure that blood sugar levels remain regulated. Complex carbohydrate consumption helps minimize blood cholesterol triglycerides and also improves digestive processes. Food sources for the diabetic include legumes, rice and whole wheat bread.

Proteins
25 percent of daily calories come from protein. Food sources include soy beans, cheese, chicken, egg whites, fish and leafy green vegetables. A diet that is excessive in protein can have harmful effects on the liver and kidneys, forcing them to work harder.

Channa
Channa dal is a legume that us a common part of the Indian diet; these legumes are revered for their anti-diabetic properties. Channa is fiber-rich and lower blood sugar levels naturally. It also reduces fasting blood sugar levels by thwarting the passage of sugars into the urine; this reduces one’s insulin requirements.

Cholesterol
The Indian diet for type 2 diabetes also recommends lowering cholesterol intake. High levels of cholesterol contribute to cardiovascular disease; no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol should be eaten daily.Baking, steaming, roasting or grilling foods reduce cholesterol levels, rather than frying them. Consume low-fat or skim milk products instead of whole-milk varieties.

Q: What is the best herbal product to control diabetes? or is there a cure for it?
I have diabetes from last 8 years. I need to know about best herbal product which I can use it in my diet plans which can either cure or keep my Blood Sugar level in control. between 70-110 fasting and 110-160 random. Do you have any suggestions please?

A: In order to keep your blood sugar level under control, read the following paragraph to update your knowledge about diabetes:

You need not to panic to visit a doctor. There are no Allopathic medicines available in the market that will cure the diabetic conditions of humans but they will control the disorder up to certain levels. The disease is developed due to eating disorders and hereditary. In the first place, I have never accepted diabetes as disease but considered it to be a disorder. The medicine is readily available at home in the form of natural products and you need not to go to market to purchase expensive medicines. To keep the sugar level under control, follow my suggestions and see the difference. Drink the juice of one bitter gourd, one cucumber and one tomato on empty stomach in the morning on a regular basis (drink this juice twice a day if you are insulin dependent) until you start feeling relief and your blood sugar level starts decreasing and continue further for a very long time until your sugar level reaches border line. The sugar level will certainly come down. Eat plenty of cucumber before meal to quench your thrust and to fill your empty stomach. Cucumbers are considered and proved to be very good for diabetic patients. Diabetic patients are always hungry to eat but can not eat all. Avoid banana, mango, custard apple and sweets like ice cream, pastry and cold drinks totally. If you are insulin dependent, even eating rice would be very harmful. You can eat fruits like guava, pineapple, pomegranate, papaya, muskmelon and watermelon. Taking one tea-spoon Fenugreek powder and quarter tea-spoon cinnamon powder on empty stomach, before breakfast daily, would be beneficial to diabetic patients. Regular brisk walking for one hour daily would be the best ideal medicine for diabetic patients. Cut down on non-vegetarian, fast, spicy and oily food, aerated cold drinks and foods rich in calories. Correct constipation. Avoid alcohol and tobacco also. Tea and coffee are also bad for health because they promote calcium excretion from the body and calcium loss from bones. Drink plenty of water daily. Take one tablet of Diabecon (By Himalaya an Herbal Health Care Company in India) twice a day as a maintenance dose. Take care and be in good health.

Q: Can onset Diabetes be cured with regular exercise and diet control? Come back to normal life later?

A: CURED — no. NO form of diabetes can be cured. Once you have it you must fight it the REST OF YOUR LIFE.

HOWEVER — if you are successful (meaning that you do EXACTLY what the doctor says, take STRICT control of your diet, get more exercise, and control your weight) then you can CONTROL it, and it will have little effect on your life.

But understand that even when you have NO symptoms, you are STILL a diabetic, and you MUST maintain control of the disease by taking control of your lifestyle. If you slip up just a little bit, the diabetes WILL come back.

Q: what are your thoughts on the raw food diet and Diabetes?
I heard it can cure type 1 and type 2 is it true?

A: Nothing can cure type 1 except a pancreas transplant. As for type 2, it can only be controlled to the point of appearing normal, it will never go away completely.

Q: is the Atkins diet good for people with Diabetes????
can it prevent diabetes or cure it (can you even cure diabetes, or is it something you’ll have forever) ????
I’m not actually interested on going on the diet… and i dont have diabetes.
I’m doing a case study on the diet and heard it helped diabetes. Obviously not!
Oh and Dr.Atkins died from slipping on ice and getting a brain heamorrage. (spl?)

A: I am not a doctor, so take this or leave it. But with type 2 adult onset DM YES YES YES YES YES YES YES do atkins. Call it whatever you want but do it. Eat as much as you want, but only eat things that will not raise your blood sugar.

My glucose always ran 370+ and I was on all sorts of meds with a doctor wanting to put me on insulin. ( I refused) Atkins is wonderful. Absolutely wonderful for DM. A highfat diet with little or no sugar cured the disease in my life. My glucose now runs like 65-75 almost all the time.

Once your learn how your body digests food and stores fat you will be able to control your blood sugar by a ketogenic diet unless you have the DM that is caused by an auto immune disease. IT DOES WORK! As God is my witness it really does work.

I eat mostly highfat foods like olives, eggs, butter, cream, pork with fat, beef with fat, smoked salmon, macademia nuts, creme cheese, avocados etc. I love boiled eggs with butter. I love cream. It really is my favorite food. I whip it and put splenda in it and either freeze it or eat it like whipped cream. You can mix it with cream cheese and make a crustless cheese cake. Eggs are one of my favorite foods make into omelots with salsa. You can also eat any veggies that are not root veggies, some fruits like avocados, melons, and berries. I don’t eat grains except a few flax seeds on scrambled eggs.

I know some people make noise about Atkins and cholesterol, but it is simply not true from my experience or my husbands. My triglycerides were 44 last time they were checked. My total cholesterol was around 178. Atkins solved almost every health problem I had except a congenital problem with a heart node. But, I can live with that. I never had to count calories and ate all I wanted to eat. I lost weight so fast on that plan, yet probably ate 2500+ calories a day. I love it.

Look up and research a ketogenic diet. It does work. And yes atkins did die in a fall. He did have viral cardiomyopathy from a virus he caught on a mission trip, but he died from a fall. And his food choices had nothing to do with the heart issue.

I just know that I know that I know from my own personal experience that a ketogenic diet will solve the adult onset form of DM. I never bought the Atkins “Treats” or shakes or anything else. I just ate meat and fat and low sugar veggies and very few berries. It works.

I just wanted to clarify that when I say cream I mean heavy whipping cream. I buy it in quart containers from the store or by the gallon from my local farmer. I go through about 3-4 quarts a week for whipped cream products, cocoa, lattes etc. Don’t use the coolwhip stuff. Even the sugar free coolwhip is simply pure sugar. You want the highfat heavy cream so your body will not convert it to sugar or raise your blood sugar. Fat is only converted to sugar in your blood stream at about 10%, so if you eat mostly all fat, your blood sugar plunges. Protein is converted at around 40%, but carbs are converted at 100%. That is why you avoid them.

I heard Dr. Atkins say once that if you always keep your blood sugar below 100 it is physically impossible for your body to store fat. That means after you eat if your blood sugar doesn’t surge you will not gain weight. So if you eat all fat, it can’t surge. I just know it really worked for me. I lost 150lbs in less than 6 months and that was many years ago. I have kept it off with atkins.
